Formidable figures, forceful females and fantastic fauna and flora. Curiously crazy creatures - often in the form of giant assemblages of body parts - are roaming the universe of Sara Yu Zeebroek. Fired by a fierce imagination and tapping into a wealth of sources, she energetically seeks to combine different artistic styles, practices and cultural belongings.
A discerning eye may see subtle nods to Flemish old masters – Pieter Breughel, Hieronymus Bosch - and more recent styles or artists – cubism, neo-cubism, surrealism, James Ensor - but translated in her personal pictorial language these images become distinctively hers: enigmatic, idiosyncratic with a hint of humor and subversiveness.
As an interdisciplinary artist she effortlessly straddles illustration, painting, singing and music-making: “Dang, that girl has the guts to create curious art!”
